How to Choose an Appliance Repair Company in Brooklyn

There is no shortage of appliance repair companies in Brooklyn. There is a shortage of ways to tell them apart before you have already paid one. Here is what actually predicts a good outcome.

The five checks that matter

1. A license number they will give you

Ask for it, and look it up. A company that hesitates on this question has answered it. Ours is Home Improvement License #13VH13896200.

2. A real address, not just a phone number

Plenty of listings in this market are lead-generation fronts that sell your call to whoever is nearest. A company with a physical location in the borough has something to lose by doing bad work. Ours is on Gravesend Neck Road.

3. Pricing they will state before the visit

You should be able to get the trip charge and the labor starting point on the phone. You should not get a firm repair quote sight-unseen — that is a sign of guessing, not confidence. Read more in our guide to what appliance repair costs.

4. A warranty with numbers in it

“We stand behind our work” is not a warranty. Ask for days, on labor and on parts, separately. Ours is 30 days on labor for the same issue and 60 days on the parts we install.

5. Training on your specific brand

Especially for built-in refrigeration, professional ranges and European brands. Ask which brands they are factory-trained on and expect a specific list.

Warning signs

  • A firm price quoted before seeing the appliance. It will change.
  • Cash-only, no invoice. No paper trail means no warranty you can enforce.
  • Pressure to replace rather than repair — particularly if they also sell appliances.
  • No license number offered.
  • Reviews that all landed in the same week. Look at the distribution over time, not just the average.
  • A vague “we service all brands” with nothing behind it.

Brooklyn-specific things worth mentioning when you book

These are the details that decide whether the visit goes smoothly here:

  • Building requirements. Many co-ops and condos require a certificate of insurance on file before a contractor is admitted. Ask your management office, and tell the repair company early — it takes time to arrange.
  • Service elevator hours. Some buildings only allow contractor moves in a window.
  • Access to the appliance. In a galley kitchen, a refrigerator may have to come out before anything can be reached. Say so, so the right time is booked.
  • Parking. Not your problem, but it is part of why a trip charge in the city looks like it does.

Have this ready before you call

  • Brand and model number (inside the door, behind the kick plate, or on the back panel).
  • The exact symptom, and when it started.
  • Any error code on the display.
  • Whether it is still under manufacturer warranty.

Those four things turn a vague booking into a technician who arrives with the right part on the van.
