Why Your Refrigerator Is Not Cooling (And What It Will Take to Fix)

A refrigerator that stops holding temperature is on a clock — you have hours, not days. The good news is that the symptom pattern narrows the cause considerably before anyone opens anything.

First: which pattern do you have?

Fridge is warm, freezer is still cold

This is the most common call we take, and it is almost always airflow, not refrigerant. Cold air is made in the freezer and moved into the fresh-food compartment. If that transfer stops, you get exactly this split.

Likely causes, in order:

  • Failed evaporator fan. The fan that pushes cold air through. Open the freezer and listen — if you hear nothing when the door switch is held in, suspect the fan.
  • Iced-over evaporator coil. The defrost system has failed (heater, thermostat, timer or board) and frost has sealed the coil so no air can pass.
  • Blocked or stuck damper. The flap that meters cold air into the fridge compartment.

Nothing is cold — both compartments warm

Now you are looking at the cooling system itself:

  • Compressor not running — a failed start relay, capacitor, or the compressor itself.
  • Condenser coils choked with dust. Genuinely common, genuinely fixable, and something you can check yourself.
  • Failed condenser fan so heat cannot be rejected.
  • Refrigerant leak. A sealed-system repair — and note that a system genuinely low on refrigerant has a leak. Topping it up without finding the leak buys months, not years.
  • Control board failure.

It runs constantly and is only slightly warm

Usually a door seal that no longer seals, a light that stays on inside, a dirty condenser, or a thermostat/thermistor misreading. The unit is working hard and losing the race.

What you can safely check yourself

  1. Power and setting. Obvious, but check the outlet with something else and confirm nobody nudged the temperature dial.
  2. Airflow inside. Overpacking, especially in front of the rear vents, causes exactly these symptoms. Give it room.
  3. Door seals. Close the door on a banknote. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is not sealing at that point.
  4. Condenser coils. Unplug the unit, find the coils (behind the lower kick plate, or on the back), and vacuum the dust off. This alone fixes a meaningful share of “not cooling well” complaints.
  5. Listen. A running compressor hums. Clicking every few minutes and then silence usually means a start relay is failing.

That is the safe list. Anything involving the sealed system, the wiring or the control board needs a technician — refrigerant handling is legally restricted for good reason.

What to do right now if it is warm

  • Keep the doors shut. A closed, full refrigerator holds temperature for roughly four hours; a freezer around 24–48 hours.
  • Move anything critical to a cooler with ice.
  • Note the model number (usually inside the fresh-food compartment on a sticker) and any error code before you call — it genuinely speeds up the visit.

Is it worth repairing?

For most faults on this list, yes — fans, defrost components, thermistors, dampers and start relays are modest parts on an otherwise sound machine. The one that changes the maths is a compressor or refrigerant leak on an older freestanding unit. On built-in and premium refrigeration, repair almost always wins.
